A surge of violent attacks on prisons in France has prompted investigations and heightened security measures, with officials attributing the assaults to organized drug traffickers.
Attackers unleashed a wave of violence targeting prisons across France, including an assault on the Toulon-La Farlède facility near the port city of Toulon. During the incident overnight from Monday to Tuesday, assailants burned vehicles and fired shots at prison walls, an escalation in a troubling trend of prison violence. This spate of incidents reportedly affected prisons in various parts of the country, with bullet holes captured in images shared by the prison workers’ union, FO Justice, which highlighted the severity of the attacks.
In response to the escalating violence, the French counterterrorism prosecutor’s office announced a formal investigation into the nature of these attacks, which have been occurring since Sunday. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin indicated that a significant visit to the Toulon facility would take place as part of efforts to support prison staff affected by these events.
Darmanin pointed to the involvement of organized drug traffickers in orchestrating these attacks, claiming a broad conspiracy targeting the French prison system. Reports indicate that similar incidents occurred in areas around Paris, including Villepinte and Nanterre, as well as in Valence and Marseille. He emphasized, “prisons are facing intimidation attempts,” and assured the public that measures would be implemented to disrupt the criminal networks behind these violent acts.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau condemned the assaults, labeling the perpetrators as thugs and directed authorities to enhance security measures to protect prison workers and reinforce safety protocols within the facilities. The situation in France's prisons has raised alarms due to reported overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, and escalating violence, prompting calls for systemic reform and intervention as the country grapples with the intertwining issues of crime and prison safety.
