Desperate Voices from Iran: Casualties and Deceit

My friends are all like me. We all know someone who was killed in the protests,” shares Parisa, a 29-year-old from Tehran, highlighting the visceral impact of the recent crackdown. With a staggering death toll surpassing 6,000 as protests erupted on December 28, the Iranian people are bearing witness to a profound crisis as their calls for change are met with utter violence.

Parisa recalls a 26-year-old friend who died from a hail of bullets in the street during the protests. Despite the escalating violence, she participated in demonstrations she deemed peaceful. “No-one was violent and no-one clashed with the security forces,” she stated. However, on the nights of January 8 and 9, authorities opened fire on civilians, sending shockwaves through the community.

Mehdi, another Tehran resident, echoed the rising tide of violence he witnessed firsthand. He spoke of witnessing multiple killings of protesters, relaying the stark reality that many Iranians feel they have nothing left to lose amidst crippling economic hardships and societal oppression.

Reports indicate that the Iranian authorities have confirmed over 3,100 fatalities, attributing most deaths to security personnel. Yet, human rights groups warn that the real number could be much higher, possibly exceeding 25,000, indicating a worrying disregard for civilian life in favor of maintaining order.

This unrest is further complicated by the Iranian government's reported financial demands on families for the return of their deceased relatives. Many families face an ultimatum: pay a hefty sum or accept a narrative that their loved ones were members of the security forces. This practice imposes another layer of trauma on grieving families, obscuring the true human cost of the protests.

Another protest participant, Parnia, described the traumatic scenes she witnessed, where children were among the casualties. You could see children who were on the street, and they got killed. Seven years old, eight years old,” she expressed, articulating a sentiment shared among many involved in the demonstrations.

Activists are raising alarms over the information blackout imposed during the protests, which has resulted in significant trauma and confusion among the populace. Many are left unable to comprehend the full scale of the violence or the fates of their loved ones.

As the protests continue to thwart the oppressive regime, the stories told reflect a powerful mosaic of despair, loss, and a yearning for change among the Iranian people. This collective trauma underscores the urgent need for international attention and intervention to uphold human rights and dignity in the face of such unprecedented violence.
