In December 2024, BYD achieved remarkable sales figures, demonstrating its potential to rival Tesla in the electric vehicle sector as they progress into the new year.

Chinese EV manufacturer BYD sees significant sales growth, nearing Tesla's lead as competition intensifies.
BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has experienced substantial growth in sales, closing in on Tesla's position as the leading global seller of electric vehicles for 2024. In December alone, BYD reported sales of 207,734 EVs, contributing to an impressive annual total of 1.76 million units. This surge in sales has been attributed to attractive subsidies and discounts that have drawn in consumers, particularly in China.
As BYD prepares to challenge Tesla's dominance, the American carmaker is expected to announce its quarterly sales figures soon. Although Tesla maintained a slight advantage in the previous quarter, BYD's momentum is undeniable. This upward trend is spearheaded by a 41% increase in total vehicle sales throughout 2024, primarily driven by the popularity of its hybrid models.
The competitive environment in China's automotive market has played a pivotal role in BYD's success, as increased competition has led to more accessible pricing and government incentives for consumers looking to replace old vehicles with electric or more fuel-efficient models. By selling 90% of its vehicles within China, BYD has positioned itself favorably against foreign competitors like Volkswagen and Toyota.
The rise of Chinese EV manufacturers such as BYD occurs amid challenges faced by traditional carmakers in major Western markets. In December, Honda and Nissan revealed they were in discussions to merge in order to combat the competitive pressures from Chinese firms. Similarly, Volkswagen announced a deal with the IG Metall union to prevent plant closures in Germany, as it navigates the rapidly changing automotive landscape. This follows the abrupt resignation of Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, just months after the company issued a profit warning, highlighting the volatility within the industry.
BYD's revenues have also taken a significant leap forward. In the third quarter of 2024, the company reported more than 200 billion yuan (approximately $28.2 billion), surpassing Tesla's revenues for the first time in this timeframe. BYD's revenue increased by 24% compared to the same period in the previous year, while Tesla posted a quarterly revenue figure of $25.2 billion. However, Tesla still retains a lead in the total number of electric vehicles sold.
As Chinese automakers strive to extend their reach beyond domestic markets, BYD has encountered hurdles. Recently, European Union tariffs of up to 45.3% on Chinese-made EV imports and a 100% duty imposed by the United States have made penetration into major markets challenging. Additionally, BYD faced a setback in Brazil, its largest international market, when construction of a factory was halted due to allegations of poor working conditions. In response, BYD severed ties with the construction firm involved and assured compliance with Brazilian laws, reaffirming its commitment to ethical practices.
Overall, the increasing competition in the EV market, along with BYD's remarkable sales figures, foreshadows a highly competitive landscape for the automotive industry in 2024.
