**Congolese President Declines Peace Summit Amid Goma Crisis**

**The absence of President Félix Tshisekedi raises concerns over regional responses to violence in Goma.**

**The Democratic Republic of Congo faces worsening unrest as government forces clash with M23 rebels, with Tshisekedi opting out of key peace talks amid escalating tensions.**

In a critical development, the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, has decided not to attend a regional summit called by Kenyan leader William Ruto, aimed at addressing the ongoing crisis in Goma, a strategic eastern city under siege by M23 rebel forces. State media reports indicate that Tshisekedi’s absence raises questions regarding the DRC's potential responses to the mounting violence, which has displaced tens of thousands and led to worsening humanitarian conditions.

The fighting in Goma has spurred widespread unrest, with heavy clashes between M23 rebels and the Congolese army causing significant casualties. Eyewitness accounts confirm that hospitals are overwhelmed, while corpses lie in the streets as sporadic gunfire continues to echo through the city. In the face of this turmoil, basic services such as electricity, water, and internet access have been severely disrupted, prompting looting and panic among the populace.

The M23 group, which has been gaining ground in the region, is accused of receiving support from neighboring Rwanda, a claim that the Rwandan government consistently denies. Despite evidence suggesting military backing, Rwandan officials, including spokespeople for the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), have claimed that any involvement is purely in the context of regional stability rather than direct military intervention.

In light of these events, the situation has sparked outrage among Congolese citizens, leading to protests in the capital Kinshasa against foreign embassies, driven by calls for international intervention. Over ten embassies have reportedly faced vandalism as demonstrators express their anger over the situation in Goma.

As the M23 continues its campaign of territorial expansion towards other strategic locations like Bukavu, the absence of President Tshisekedi from peace discussions could hinder the DRC's diplomatic efforts to secure support and develop an alliance to stabilize the situation. Goma's residents, while cautiously venturing into the streets for provisions, face daily uncertainty and escalating tensions, further complicating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
