Kolkata: A Nighttime Transformation Inspired by Paris

As the air-conditioned bus weaves through the bustling traffic of Kolkata, tour leader Sujoy Sen lists various sights that represent the city’s cosmopolitan history. Unlike typical day tours, this experience is dedicated to the illumination of the heritage buildings at night.

The Kolkata Illumination Project stands as a remarkable initiative undertaken by the citizens' group Kolkata Restorers. Their mission is to shed light—literally—on the city’s historical architecture, offering a nighttime spectacle that echoes the romantic allure of Paris.

Sen's fascination began when he stumbled across an article about city enthusiasts illuminating neglected historical landmarks. Recently, he shared his experiences with tour participant Himanjali Sankar, who noted that the lights breathe new life into the familiar structures that define Kolkata's skyline.

”It’s like they are coming alive, reclaiming their grandeur,” she remarked.

Behind the project is a collaborative spirit, epitomized by lighting designer Mudar Patherya, who believes that illuminating these structures can revive a collective pride. Over the past 21 months, the group has successfully lit 92 buildings, creating a breathtaking nighttime ambiance that highlights Kolkata’s architectural diversity—an eclectic mix of neoclassical, Gothic, and Art Deco styles.

Despite facing challenges like deteriorating buildings, Patherya sees this venture as a model for citizen-led restoration efforts. With an emphasis on accessibility and community involvement, the project aims to continue its journey towards lighting up 200 structures, showcasing the rich history and vibrant culture of Kolkata after dark.
