Forensic testing has revealed that a suitcase found on a rural road near the small village of Oallen, about 230 km southwest of Sydney, contained a lifelike doll rather than human remains.
Police had initially announced a murder investigation following the discovery, but hours later stated that forensic testing proved the contents were not human.
The doll, which wore clothing, had hair, a nose piercing, and markings that resembled bruises and grazes—an appearance that had fooled cursory observers.
Superintendent Linda Bradbury said forensic teams had confirmed the non‑human nature of the contents and that the investigation complied with standard protocols to preserve crime scene integrity.
Police closed the case after notifying the two men who found the suitcase that it was not a body, describing the incident as a “quite a shocking discovery.”
