A flood emergency has been declared across Bangkok after nearly 48 hours of heavy rain overwhelmed the city's drainage network, leaving many roads submerged.
Authorities urged residents – especially those near the extensive canal system – to stay inside and secure belongings on higher floors.
Heavy thunderstorms can be a regular feature of the Southeast Asian monsoon, but the recent intensity has exceeded normal capacities, creating traffic chaos in an already congested metropolis.
Residents reported rising water levels, with some households experiencing waist‑deep conditions and temporarily closing businesses.
So far, there have been no fatalities in Bangkok, though the Thai Meteorological Service forecasts continued showers throughout the week and warns that additional flooding could occur if canals overflow again.
City governor Chadchart Sittipunt said that the east of the city has been hardest affected and that pumping operations are ongoing while water levels in canals remain at full capacity.
