A Palestinian man has been killed and several others seriously injured in a series of attacks attributed to Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. Local residents report that within the span of a day, multiple new outposts—clusters of settler homes that are unauthorized by the Israeli government—have been established in regions where the Palestinian Authority is supposed to maintain full control.
The violence has intensified, coinciding with the onset of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, which began in late February. Mohammad al-Malhi's death adds to a troubling tally—he became the seventh Palestinian casualty during this critical period, his family stated he was shot by settlers who had encroached on their land near Bethlehem.
Witness accounts reveal that after Israeli soldiers attempted to dismantle the newly erected outpost, which settlers swiftly rebuilt, the confrontation escalated leading to the shooting. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported a clash occurred during which an Israeli civilian fired the weapon.
Footage circulating on social media shows another distressing incident where a 75-year-old man was brutally attacked in his home by settlers in Tayasir, after they invaded the village, reportedly shooting at younger locals who challenged them. This wave of violence mirrors trends observed during previous confrontations, notably the Gaza war provoked by Hamas-led attacks on Israel in October 2023.
While reports indicate that the Israeli government continues to authorize and expedite settlement growth, creating new settlements in the West Bank—an act deemed illegal under international law—outposts remain uncertainties, often constructed without government sanction. Over the past few days alone, numerous unauthorized outposts have emerged, prompting reactions from the authorities that have included the removal of some. Nevertheless, many settler outpost establishments have received retroactive legislation favoring their establishment.
With about 160 settlements housing approximately 700,000 Israelis developed since the 1967 Middle East war, the current situation presents a stark reality for around 3.3 million Palestinians living in the contested territories, longing for a viable state within these disquieting dynamics.
