Five people have died and tens of thousands have been left without power in Ukraine after intense Russian missile and drone attacks overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
Four members of one family, including a 15-year-old girl, were killed by a strike in the village of Lapaivka as attacks mostly targeted the western region of Lviv.
One person also died in Zaporizhzhia. Zelensky said Russia fired more than 50 missiles and around 500 attack drones, with Ukraine's air force reporting a total of 549 attacks.
Russia's defense ministry claimed a successful operation against Ukrainian military and infrastructure targets.
Ukraine's neighbor, Poland, scrambled fighter jets to ensure the safety of its airspace, alongside deployments from allied NATO aircraft.
Lviv endured several hours of strikes, leading to public transport suspensions and electrical outages. Maksym Kozytskyi, the regional head, noted that this was the largest attack on the region since the war began in 2022, identifying 163 drones and missiles in the area.
Kozytskyi condemned the assault as especially cynical given the impending winter heating season.
Emergency measures were taken as damage was reported in Chernihiv, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia, with over 73,000 consumers left without electricity due to strikes on power infrastructure.
As reports emerged of direct hits on residential areas, President Zelensky urged for more defense support, especially for air defense, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire in the skies to facilitate real diplomacy.
This wave of attacks is part of a broader strategy as winter approaches, with focus on crippling Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
Ukraine's air force noted that among the strikes, they managed to intercept a significant number of missiles and drones, although the assaults continue to escalate tensions in the region and raise fears of further humanitarian impacts.
