Philadelphia Police are on the hunt for a man who has been chasing and threatening residents near City Hall, wearing a doll‑like mask that has sparked public alarm.
Surveillance footage released by the department shows the suspect confronting a woman running in the street on 12 August, asking her if she was “ready to die” and threatening her while holding his hand behind his back. The woman was forced to stumble, sustaining a minor injury before the masked figure fled into an underground rail station.
The incident is part of a pattern, as police say the suspect reportedly chased at least six people over a days‑span, often commenting that they wanted to “race me” in a seemingly twisted game. In one case the man filmed the encounter with a cellphone, holding the light on the camera. Authorities have not ruled out that the behaviour might be linked to a broader social‑media trend, though the motive remains unclear.
Captain Jason Smith of the Philadelphia Police Department has stated that the suspect faces charges of terroristic threats, simple assault, and other offences. Police have requested the public’s help to identify the individual, urging anyone who saw the suspect or has additional information to contact the department.
Community members, including runners who had recently met the suspect, are contemplating changing their routes. Luanda Marinho, who encountered the masked man while meeting a friend for a morning run, said, “He keeps asking if we want to race, but none of us responded. It felt like a twisted game.”
As police continue to investigate, residents are advised to remain alert, report sightings to authorities, and refrain from confrontations with suspects wearing disturbing or potentially dangerous masks.
