Meta Retreats on AI Image Generation Tool after Privacy Concerns
Meta has withdrawn its recently launched Muse Image feature from Instagram amid criticism over privacy infringements.
The tool, rolled out on Tuesday, let users tag public‑facing accounts and use their content to create AI‑generated images. That capability raised alarms that public account holders could be used without consent.
The initiative was met with blowback from users, SAG‑AFTRA, and Privacy International, who described the approach as a miscalculation. In response, Meta acknowledged it had “missed the mark” and removed the feature.
Meta said the intention was to give creators control over their public content but the backlash forced a reversal. The firm has other AI projects on the horizon for WhatsApp, Facebook and Messenger.
Meta declined to comment further, but the incident underlines the need to balance innovation with privacy safeguards.
