Panama Braces for Aftermath as 7.7‑Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Region

A powerful 7.7‑magnitude earthquake struck Panama just before 3 p.m. local time on Friday, sending shock waves that rippled across a vast region. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, roughly 4.6 million people experienced moderate to severe tremors, and the tremor was described as likely to be widespread.

The epicentre lay about 10 km from the town of Pitaloza Arriba in south‑central Panama, and the quake’s shallow depth of 12 km contributed to the intensity of the surface shaking. Immediate images from social media show buildings in Penonomé and Soná collapsed, a local hotel nearly falling apart, and a cathedral’s side and spire breaking apart.

In Panama City, roughly 200 km from the epicentre, residents fled buildings and gathered in parks while authorities inspected debris falling onto streets. Damage appears limited to falling roof material, but several homes, including those of senior residents in the Herrera province, have cracked and are at risk of further collapse.

The government has mobilised emergency services. President José Raúl Mulino urged calm and said the event should not spark alarm or disorder. Meanwhile, the Panama Canal, a vital maritime artery, reported no impact from the tremor, according to the Panama Canal Authority.

A series of aftershocks have followed the main quake, raising concerns about the stability of damaged structures. The seismic event also came just three days prior to a national evacuation drill scheduled for a major earthquake, highlighting the region’s growing focus on disaster preparedness.

Initial tsunami warnings were issued for eleven neighbouring countries, but the U.S. Tsunami Warning System confirmed there was no danger. The quake also follows recent devastating earthquakes in Colombia and Venezuela earlier in the year, underscoring a pattern of heightened seismic activity in the Caribbean and adjacent zones.

The seismic event highlights the ongoing vulnerability of infrastructure in the region. Experts emphasize the importance of robust building codes and community preparedness, while local authorities plan to conduct a comprehensive assessment of structural damage and resident safety.
