The Powerball jackpot has jumped to an eye-popping $1.7 billion, following the 46th consecutive drawing that went without a big winner. The latest numbers drawn on Monday night were 3, 18, 36, 41, 54, and the Powerball 7.
Since September 6, 2023, there have been 46 straight drawings where no one has claimed the top prize. The next drawing is scheduled for Christmas Eve this Wednesday and is poised to be the fourth-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.
Powerball's odds are set at 1 in 292.2 million, a factor that plays into generating these massive jackpots as they accumulate when no one wins. While the odds for the top prize are daunting, lottery officials emphasize that there are significantly better chances for smaller prizes.
The estimated $1.6 billion jackpot would typically be distributed to a winner through 30 payments over 29 years if they choose the annuity option. However, most winners prefer the cash option, which for the Monday night drawing could amount to approximately $735.3 million.
Powerball tickets are sold at the price of $2 and are available in 45 states, along with Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
