A Russian warship fired warning shots at a small UK‑registered yacht 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight in the eastern English Channel. The incident, occurring at approximately 11:40 BST on Tuesday, involved the frigate Admiral Grigorovich, which is believed to have been under Royal Navy surveillance in the area.
BBC reporting confirms that the yacht, devoid of a motor, had drifted toward the warship amid foggy conditions. The Russian vessel fired warning shots after issuing an audible warning to push the yacht away. No injuries or damage were reported.
The Ministry of Defence is investigating the event and stated that it was not linked to a previous operation conducted by British forces that intercepted a Russian shadow fleet tanker in the Channel. The Regent's Frigate has been observed escorting and escorting shadow fleet vessels, with help from a repair vessel that supplies food, water, and other essentials.
Analysts emphasise that Russian vessels frequently navigate the Channel, routinely monitored by Royal Navy ships. During the weekend, Admiral Grigorovich was tracked by HMS Mersey and HMS Tyne in a routine operation off the coast of Brest, France.
This incident comes amid heightened tensions between the UK and Russia over the former’s support for Ukraine. Despite the warning shots, officials have only described the event as isolated, and no further military escalations have been reported.
