OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Doug Martin, a former All-Pro NFL running back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died at the age of 36 after an encounter with police during a custody process related to a suspected break-in. The Oakland Police Department reported that Martin became unresponsive following his arrest early Saturday.
The official cause of death has yet to be determined, as the Alameda County Coroner's Office has announced an autopsy will take place. Initial reports suggest a brief struggle occurred between Martin and the officers during the attempts to take him into custody, but further details remain undisclosed by the police.
Originally from Oakland and a high school football standout in Stockton, Martin's professional career began after he was drafted 31st overall in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. His impressive rookie season, in which he rushed for 1,454 yards and secured a Pro Bowl selection, set the tone for a notable career, ultimately amassing 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns over six seasons.
Former agent Brian Murphy stated that Martin faced significant mental health challenges that impacted his daily life and encouraged his parents to seek help prior to the tragic incident. Murphy mentioned that Martin had fled his home in a state of overwhelm and disorientation before entering a neighbor's home where he was subsequently taken into custody.
The situation surrounding Martin's death is under investigation by the police, alongside the city's police commission and the district attorney's office. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee expressed condolences to Martin's family, stating the city mourns the loss of a dedicated player while recognizing the impact of mental health issues.
The Buccaneers also released a statement expressing their sorrow at the untimely passing of Martin, highlighting the lasting legacy he left within their franchise as one of the top players in team history.
