In the wake of the deadliest blaze in decades that resulted in 159 fatalities, Hong Kong authorities mandate removal of improperly tested scaffolding mesh.

Hong Kong has initiated the removal of scaffolding mesh from ongoing renovation sites following a devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex that claimed 159 lives last week. Authorities identified that the protective netting failed safety standards, prompting new regulatory measures. Investigations continue, with police arresting multiple contractors for potential manslaughter as the search for missing persons persists amid community sorrow.

Authorities in Hong Kong have ordered the immediate removal of scaffolding mesh from buildings undergoing renovations, following an investigation into the territory's deadliest fire in decades. This tragic event occurred at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex last Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of 159 individuals, with 31 still reported missing.

Investigators revealed that the protective netting, which was in place during extensive renovations, did not comply with flame retardant standards. Hong Kong's Secretary for Development, Bernadette Linn Hon-ho, announced that new guidelines for testing materials used in scaffolding will be published next week.

Approximately 200 private residential and 10 public buildings are currently under renovation in Hong Kong, affected by a directive that aims to enhance safety protocols and prevent a repeat of such catastrophic incidents. Reports indicate that the removal order may impact around 300 buildings in total.

Reflecting on the tragedy, Linn has assured the public that accountability for any contractors employing substandard construction materials will be pursued rigorously. Samples from the scaffolding mesh are currently undergoing testing as part of the investigation.

As the fire spread rapidly through the Wang Fuk Court complex, it was determined that flammable materials, including the mesh netting, significantly contributed to the disaster. Police efforts have resulted in at least 15 arrests related to manslaughter as the push for answers continues.

A police commissioner remarked that while searches within the towers are complete, operations will proceed in searching the remains of the bamboo scaffolding for additional victims. Authorities reported that among the identified bodies, 49 were male and 91 female, aged from one to 97 years.

In the wake of this horrific incident, lost families are confronted with their grief. A couple in their 70s, who lost their home in the blaze, expressed their horror as they witnessed flames engulfing portion after portion of the building, leaving them feeling helpless.

As investigations immediately proceed, questions surrounding the safety of building regulations and the qualifications of contractors linger in the hearts of many residents, sparking a demand for greater transparency and accountability within the construction industry.
