US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of seeking a third term for the White House, expressing a desire to do so. However, he pushed back against the notion of running for vice president in 2028—a suggestion from some supporters aimed at bypassing constitutional restrictions against a third presidential term. Trump described this idea as too cute and said it wouldn't be right.
While traveling aboard Air Force One to Japan from Malaysia, Trump indicated that he would be allowed to run for vice president, yet he has no intention of doing so, stating that it would not align with public sentiment. I think people wouldn't like that, he remarked.
Despite the constitutional barrier posed by the 22nd Amendment, Trump hinted at having the best poll numbers he’s ever seen, a remark that raises questions about his political ambitions moving forward. He also pointed out significant potential successors in the Republican Party, like Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, noting their capability.
Comments from Trump's former advisor Steve Bannon suggested a plan exists to secure Trump a third term, claiming, Trump is going to be president in '28, and people ought to just get accommodated with that. However, any attempt to repeal the amendment prohibiting a third term would require broad bipartisan support in Congress, a challenging feat.
While the political landscape shifts, several Democrats have begun hinting at their intentions for the upcoming election cycle, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris, both of whom have shown interest in potential presidential bids.
