WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon has sent a host of U.S. military assets into the Middle East over the past several weeks, including an aircraft carrier group and its thousands of troops as President Donald Trump indicates he is maintaining the possibility of strikes on Iran.

“We have a lot of very big, very powerful ships sailing to Iran right now, and it would be great if we didn’t have to use them,” Trump said Thursday.

Trump initially threatened military action if Iran carried out mass executions of prisoners or killed peaceful demonstrators, but later claimed that Iran halted the hangings of 800 detained protesters. Iran’s top prosecutor criticized Trump’s claim as “completely false.”

This week, Trump reiterated that Iran must make a deal on its nuclear program, warning that failure to do so could lead to an attack far worse than last year's strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Aircraft Carrier Bolsters US Presence in the Middle East

The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and three guided-missile destroyers are now in the Arabian Sea, according to U.S. Central Command. The carrier strike group arrived in the Middle East recently, adding approximately 5,700 service members to the region.

This deployment follows a reassessment of U.S. military assets, with the Trump administration previously shifting resources to the Caribbean Sea as part of a pressure campaign against former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Increased Military Activities

Central Command confirmed the arrival of Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles, enhancing combat readiness in the region. Additionally, the UK Ministry of Defense announced the deployment of Typhoon fighter jets to Qatar for defensive purposes, alongside a notable increase in U.S. military cargo plane activity toward the area.

Trump Administration's Threats Against Iran

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated that the U.S. military is prepared to act as Trump emphasizes the urgency for a deal with Iran. Secretary of State Marco Rubio believes the military buildup can defend against potential Iranian threats to American personnel and allies in the region.

Trump's threats come in light of ongoing protests in Iran, where reports indicate a severe crackdown has led to widespread casualties among demonstrators. The U.S. and EU have imposed new sanctions targeting Iranian officials for their roles in the crackdown.
