In brief

Ukraine officials report ongoing issues with Starlink internet after Donald Trump announced that Elon Musk had lifted restrictions. Drone operators still lose connection above 100 mph, affecting battlefield coordination. Ukraine defence ministry has not confirmed the end of limits and continues monitoring both the civilian Starlink and military Starshield networks. The dispute highlights the complex interplay between technology, warfare, and international diplomacy.

Ukraine defence sources say the country is still dealing with restricted Starlink internet, despite Donald Trump claiming that Elon Musk has reversed the limits.

Reports from Kyiv detail that drones lose a connection when moving faster than 100 mph, which hampers military coordination on the front line.

Trump has denied that he instructed Musk to cut back on Starlink or its military‑grade counterpart Starshield. In a message to reporters, he pledged to address the problem if it was not resolved.

Elon Musk has said he is not responsible for the slowdown that has limited Ukraine’s use of attack drones and coordinated defence operations.

The Ukrainian defence ministry continues to monitor both networks and has not confirmed that the restrictions have been lifted.

Last week, uplink speeds to the low‑Earth orbit satellites were throttled. Official statements indicated any vehicle travelling faster than 100 mph loses the connection.

Musk previously suggested that the Pentagon or U.S. government may be behind the slowdown. The White House has repeatedly denied placing any intentional limits on the network in Ukraine.

In a separate call, the U.K. Prime Minister highlighted the importance for Ukraine to maintain full access to Starlink for ongoing defence efforts against the Russian invasion.

Starlink provides around 10,000 satellites to deliver connectivity even in remote areas. Starshield, its more secure version, allows real‑time drone targeting and interceptor operations. Ukraine relies heavily on this technology to coordinate attacks and maintain situational awareness.

While Russia is not authorised to use Starlink, Ukrainian forces have expressed concern that any complete shutdown of the service would create an “absolute catastrophe” for their battlefield operations.

The current dispute underscores the geopolitical complexities where advanced technology, military operations and diplomatic tensions intersect. The situation remains fluid as Ukraine seeks confirmation that the restrictions are truly lifted and NATO partners monitor the broader implications for regional security.
