The fifth annual European Sea Gull Screeching Championship took place in De Panne, Belgium, drawing participants from across Europe. Decorated in stunning costumes, contestants imitated the cries of gulls, aiming to foster a more positive perspective on these birds while providing entertainment.

In the coastal town of De Panne, Belgium, the sounds of man-made sea gull calls filled the air as participants gathered to compete in the fifth European Sea Gull Screeching Championship. Held on Sunday, this unique event attracted contestants from 13 different countries, emphasizing the art of mimicking the distinct squawks and screeches associated with sea gulls.Eager competitors, dressed in artistic costumes that included faux feathers, beaks, and claws, transformed the venue into a colorful scene reminiscent of a lively avian festival. Among the 70 participants, Anna Brynald from Denmark captured the top prize in the adult category. Her striking costume featured white-and-yellow face paint, a feather boa, and a cape designed to resemble wings. "I practiced with TikTok and I practiced in front of the mirror and in front of the sea gulls," Ms. Brynald shared, reflecting her dedication to the craft.Participants not only showcased their vocal imitations but also their theatrical skill, with some competitors using props. One woman, with arms stretched like wings, synchronized her screeches with playful antics as she dipped her face into a snack bag.The event served not only as a contest but also as a platform for re-evaluating the perception of sea gulls, often deemed as nuisances by the general public. Contestants advocated for a kinder viewpoint: “People think sea gulls are annoying, but in fact, they only take care of their little ones," remarked one participant. They believe that through humor and performance, a more sympathetic view of these birds can be fostered. As the competition concluded, the festive atmosphere underscored the camaraderie among contestants, uniting them in their love for sea gulls and the joy of participation in this whimsical contest.
