In brief

Xinhua reported Laos’ October inflation eased slightly to 7.7 percent from 7.8 percent in September, with the sharpest rise in housing, water, electricity and gas at 29.6 percent. Other contributors included education (16 percent), communications and transport (13 percent) and medical care (10.3 percent). The central bank aims to keep inflation below 7 percent in 2026 to support macro‑economic stability and confidence in the Lao kip.

Laos recorded an inflation rate of 7.7 percent in October, a slight decline from 7.8 percent in September, according to a report released by the Lao Statistics Bureau on Monday.

Xinhua said the rise was powered by higher costs for electricity, fuel and food items such as beef, poultry and fish, as well as seasonal goods.

The most pronounced rise occurred in the housing, water, electricity, and gas sector, which climbed 29.6 percent, Xinhua reported.

Other notable contributors to inflation were the education sector at 16 percent, communications and transport each at roughly 13 percent, and medical care and medicines at 10.3 percent, according to the agency.

The Lao central bank has set a target of keeping average inflation below 7 percent in 2026, aiming to preserve macro‑economic stability, strengthen confidence in the Lao kip, and support sustainable growth, Xinhua added.

The modest 0.1‑percentage‑point decline suggests a mild easing of price pressures, yet the sharp increase in housing‑related utilities indicates households may still face rising living costs.

Experts note that while overall inflation is trending down, the persistent rise in key consumption categories could influence consumer purchasing power and public sentiment.

The central bank’s focus on macro‑economic stability reflects broader policy priorities in the region, as neighboring economies also grapple with inflationary pressures amid post‑pandemic recovery.

Analysts point out that maintaining inflation below the 7 percent target will require careful management of supply chains and price controls in core sectors highlighted by the latest data.

Given the recent uptick in energy and food prices, Laos’ policymakers face a delicate balancing act between encouraging growth and preventing runaway consumer costs, a point emphasized by Xinhua’s coverage of the central bank’s objectives.
