The Northern Territory of Australia is approaching a milestone for the region’s water security as the Manton Dam Return to Service project entered the commissioning stage, according to a territory government statement released on Friday. The project, valued at roughly 174 million Australian dollars—about 114 million U.S. dollars—will add an estimated 7,300 megalitres of potable water each year to Darwin’s supply by the end of 2026, Xinhua reported.

The upgrade integrates several key components that upgrade the existing water system. Work began with the modernization of a long‑used reservoir intake tower, followed by the construction of the new Straus Water Treatment Plant, a dedicated pump station, and 22 kilometres of new pipeline to link the reservoir with Darwin’s distribution network, the outlet detailed.

Once fully commissioned, the enhancements are expected to strengthen water security for Darwin and surrounding communities. Xinhua added that the added supply of 7,300 megalitres per annum places the region on a firmer footing for future growth, flood management and seasonal demand spikes.

The initiative is the first stage of the broader Darwin Region Water Supply Infrastructure Programme, an investment joint‑funded by the Australian federal government and the Northern Territory administration. The project was completed 15 million Australian dollars below the original budget, under budget, highlighting efficient cost management, according to the statement.

During the two‑year build, the government claim that more than 111 workers and 500 contractors were employed, pulling local businesses into the project’s supply chain. The activity has created employment opportunities and injected capital into the region’s economy, Xinhua reported.

Commissioning of the new water treatment plant is now underway, with the pipework and pumping infrastructure expected to be online by the end of 2026. State officials said that water from the Manton Dam will be introduced into Darwin’s supply network once the plant is fully operational, finalising the project’s primary objective.

The completion of the Manton Dam Return to Service project represents a substantial step toward ensuring reliable water access for Darwin’s residents amid ongoing climate variability. The project’s early budgeting, infrastructure upgrades, and local job creation exemplify a coordinated response between federal and territorial authorities to meet long‑term regional needs, the outlet summarized.
