Guan Heng, a Chinese national known for exposing human rights abuses in China, has been released from federal detention after more than five months of custody. His release comes after an immigration judge granted him asylum, recognizing the risks he would face if deported back to China.

After being reunited with his mother, who came from Taiwan to support him, Guan expressed relief, stating, I’m in a great mood. His mother, Luo Yun, reflected on the emotional toll experienced during her son's detention, saying, For five and half months, I didn’t sleep one good sleep, but today I feel assured.

Guan was detained during the Trump administration's strict immigration enforcement, facing the prospect of being sent to Uganda before public outcry and political intervention led to a reevaluation of his case. The Department of Homeland Security has not confirmed whether it will appeal the ruling.

Rep. Ro Khanna, a top Democrat on the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, emphasized that the situation should have never escalated to such extensive detention and reaffirmed the importance of upholding justice for human rights defenders.

Guan, who documented conditions inside Xinjiang detention camps that reportedly house up to one million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities, fled China in search of safety and a platform to share evidence of these abuses. The Chinese government has consistently denied such allegations, framing their actions in Xinjiang as necessary for combating extremism.

Asylum was not Guan's objective when he initially filmed the detention facilities; he sought merely to raise awareness for the plight of the Uyghurs. His journey to the U.S. included detours through Hong Kong and Ecuador before arriving on a boat in Florida in late 2021, with the intention of ensuring his footage reached a wider audience.

The U.S. State Department has condemned China's ongoing violations of human rights, particularly against the Uyghur population, reinforcing a stance of support for human rights defenders worldwide.
