In a heartbreaking account of the recent violence in Israel, Dhan Bahadur Chaudhary recalls how his friend Bipin Joshi threw back a grenade launched by Hamas attackers before being taken hostage. This courageous act likely saved Dhan's life and those of four others injured during the assault.
Speaking to BBC Nepali, Dhan expressed, I may not have survived if both grenades had exploded. Bipin showed courage and threw the grenade out. This tragic incident unfolded on October 7, 2023, when Bipin, at just 23 years old, was working on a kibbutz as part of an agricultural exchange program with 15 other Nepali students.
As the attack commenced, two grenades were thrown near their shelter. Bipin's quick thinking in tossing one grenade away from the bunker ensured that only one exploded inside, leading to injuries among the group while preserving several lives. Sadly, Bipin was the only one among his friends who was captured by Hamas.
Following an anxious wait for news, Bipin's family and friends grappled with the tragedy of his demise, confirmed just days later when his body was identified among those returned by Hamas. His death marks a deep loss for his family in Bhimdutta municipality and his friends in Nepal.
Dhan Bahadur emphasized the impact of their dreams cut short: We had hoped to start our own enterprises after returning home. Now, all of Nepal is in grief over Bipin's death. He lamented the missed opportunities that Bipin had envisioned, sharing fond memories of friendship, dreams of a brighter future, and even plans for a music video.
As Bipin's family prepares to receive his remains, Dhan and other surviving friends are determined to honor his memory by providing support to his grieving family.
