Six Dead in Gaza After Israeli Strike, Including Al Jazeera Cameraman
An Israeli airstrike on the southern Gaza enclave on Saturday evening killed six civilians, including Al Jazeera correspondent Ahmed Wishah. The death took place in a residential area of the Bureij refugee camp, according to local hospital officials and the Hamas‑run civil defence agency. Al Jazeera has issued a strongly worded condemnation, calling the strike a “heinous crime” and a violation of international norms that silence journalists.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have described Wishah as a “terrorist” linked to Hamas’s military wing and alleged he had participated in sniper operations against Israeli forces. The IDF has yet to provide evidence for these claims, while Al Jazeera maintains that Wishah was a neutral observer. The strike also resulted in the death of two additional individuals, who the IDF identifies as Hamas fighters, and a child aged 12 was reported among those killed by local health officials.
The incident arrives amid a fragile ceasefire that began in October after a truce was brokered between Israel and Hamas. The United Nations reports that the ceasefire has prevented an estimated 73,000 deaths, yet both sides have accused each other of violations. The Gaza Health Ministry, whose figures are recognized by the UN as reliable, states that Israel has killed 1,007 people since the ceasefire began.
Beyond the immediate tragedy, humanitarian agencies report that approximately 81% of Gaza buildings have been damaged, and 70% of the population still requires basic services such as shelter, clean water, and medical care. Tom Fletcher, head of the UN’s humanitarian agency, noted that while the percentage of households going to bed hungry dropped from 92% to 36% following the ceasefire, systemic infrastructure deficits persist.
The strike in Bureij and a separate dormitory‑block assault in the Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City, where four family members were killed, raise questions about the proportionality and objectives of the IDF’s operations. Local residents describe the attacks as targeting innocent civilians, with one individual asserting that “We are civilians. I never held a weapon.”
Both parties have demanded that the ceasefire terms be respected. The White‑Streets mediation plan calls for Israel to reduce control of Gaza to 70% of its territory, a point that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly endorsed. However, Hamas has rejected a disarmament proposal, maintaining that they have not been able to relinquish their governance role in Gaza.
