In brief

Paris Saint‑Germain and Lyon’s Saturday match was postponed to Monday at 20:30 by the LFP as security forces prepare for a weekend of large‑scale protests. Police vetoed the original schedule after a 550,000‑strong demonstration that left streets in Paris and other cities on edge, with incidents of violence and looting reported. The change also follows a busy Sunday in Paris hosting an NFL game that will draw extensive police attention. The postponement pushes the game onto the same day as London’s Ballon d’Or ceremony and highlights the growing tension between sporting events and civic unrest.

Paris Saint‑Germain’s match against Lyon was pushed back 24 hours to Monday as the city braces for more protests.

The fixture, which had been slated for 19:45 GMT on Sunday, will now kick off at 20:30 on Monday, according to a statement released by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP).

French police had barred the original attendance after a nationwide demonstration saw about 550,000 people march in Paris and other major cities. Roughly a third of the crowd protested rising fuel costs, education standards and the cost of living, with some incidents of violence and looting reported.

The scheduling clash is compounded by a Sunday NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France, an event that will also require heavy police presence. In addition, the disruption forced Toulouse to shift its game against Troyes from Saturday to Sunday.

PSG, which currently sits second on the league table, remains a contender as the match now falls on the same day as the Ballon d’Or award ceremony in London. Injured squad members such as Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia could be in the running for the prestigious trophy.
