Six people have been killed in Russian attacks on four Ukrainian regions in the past 24 hours, local authorities report.
The southern city of Zaporizhzhia witnessed two fatalities from a drone strike on a residential house, with eight individuals, including two children, suffering injuries. Similar attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region resulted in two deaths and five more injuries, while one death was reported in both the eastern Donetsk and southern Kherson regions.
This violence accompanies ongoing negotiations involving Ukrainian and US teams aimed at seeking an end to Russia's full-scale invasion. The talks, recently initiated in Florida, marked the first direct discussions since prior engagements, amidst heightened military actions in the region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been vocal about wanting to address the recent US policy shift regarding sanctions on Russian oil, which is perceived as threatening Ukraine's position in the ongoing conflict.
Zelensky stated in a late-night address, It is important for all of us across the world that diplomacy continues and we're trying to stop this war. He emphasized the need to discern how prepared Russia is for a genuine peace agreement, especially following geopolitical tensions arising from the situation in Iran.
Despite several rounds of negotiations failing to yield significant breakthroughs in halting the hostilities or altering Russia's demands, the discussions are scheduled to resume. The pervasive suffering experienced by civilians was poignantly reflected in the words of a friend of one of the drone strike victims who expressed despair over the incessant violence.
Fresh tension is brewing over the US's recent decision to ease sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil, a move that critics argue undermines international pressure on Russia. Ukrainian officials and allies remain apprehensive about the implications this policy shift holds for the conflict.
The current situation in Zaporizhzhia reflects broader trends in Russia's military tactics since the outset of its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. As military resources remain strained, discussions extend to potential military aid from Ukraine to the US in countering Iranian threats, illustrating the interconnected nature of contemporary international conflicts.
