FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The FBI announced on Wednesday that a suspicious package discovered outside a gate at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa earlier this week was found to contain possible energetic materials. An assessment of the materials is ongoing, with no further details disclosed by the FBI as they continue their investigation.
Energetic materials typically feature a significant amount of chemical energy, including possibly explosive materials, fuels, or propellants. The suspicious package was located on Monday outside the MacDill Air Force Base Visitor Center, prompting immediate action from security forces.
On the same day, MacDill implemented a shelter-in-place order due to an unspecified threat. Officials emphasized the seriousness with which they treat such threats, stating they are prioritizing the safety and security of the installation. However, they refrained from delving into specifics regarding the security measures they enacted.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted approximately two hours later, though the base remains on heightened alert, according to officials. The base began operating under Force Protection Charlie (FPCON Charlie) status, indicative of a serious threat to the military installation.
Personnel at MacDill have been advised to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities. This heightened security at the base coincides with the ongoing military operations in the region, particularly in light of increased tensions with Iran.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which is situated at MacDill, oversees military operations across the Middle East, Central Asia, and portions of South Asia. This base has been operational under heightened alert levels since conflicts with Iran have escalated.
Recently, the military also mourned the loss of six crew members of a KC-135 refueling aircraft that tragically crashed while supporting operations in the region. Among the deceased were three service members associated with the 6th Air Refueling Wing based at MacDill.
