Welcome to Cake Picnic, Sydney edition. It's the viral event that has sold out in cities like San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles; now it has landed on Australian shores, bringing joy and creativity along with it.
Founded by Elisa Sunga, this year's gathering attracted over 500 cake enthusiasts at the Botanic Gardens, where the diverse culinary creations shined against the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. From large, multi-layered confections to savory offerings like focaccia cake, the picnic was a vibrant celebration of community and baking.
Elisa, a part-time hobby baker and full-time Google employee specializing in AI, never envisioned her love for cake would spark a global phenomenon. It just seems so whimsical and delightful to be able to do that, she expressed, reflecting on the joy that the event brings to participants as they share their baked goods.
Attendees brought cakes that met specific criteria—20cm wide and 7.5cm high—spanning a wide range of flavors and designs. Many participants, like Hilary Lindgren, baked late into the night to prepare for the event, highlighting the personal investment and excitement wrapped around each creation.
There is a profound joy and sense of togetherness at the event, which is non-competitive and inclusive of all skill levels. It feels unreal, Sunga remarked about the enthusiasm toward her culinary vision. The event fosters connections across generations and backgrounds, with attendees cherishing the experience of collectively enjoying delicious cakes while sharing stories and recipes.
As attendees delightfully taste through rows of cakes, it’s clear that the Cake Picnic is not just an event; it’s a celebration of creativity, community, and the simple pleasures of life.
