Golfer Tiger Woods has been charged with driving under the influence after a car crash in Florida, police say.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office stated that the 15-time major champion also faces charges for property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

Sheriff John Budensiek reported that Woods, 50, rolled his Land Rover after colliding with a pressure cleaner truck on Jupiter Island last Friday.

The golfer had to crawl out of the passenger side of his vehicle but passed a breathalyser test post-crash, though he refused a urine test.

No injuries were sustained in the incident, which took place shortly after 2 PM local time.

Sheriff Budensiek commented in a news conference: The DUI investigators came to the scene and Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment. However, he explained the injuries and surgeries he's had, which were taken into account during the investigations.

After several tests, he was arrested and taken to the Martin County jail.

He further noted that at the jail and on site, there were no suspicions of alcohol involvement, confirmed by a breathalyser test showing zero alcohol levels. However, the refusal of a urine test means definitive results regarding potential impairment remain uncertain.

He has the right to refuse that test, noted Budensiek, highlighting that Woods’s refusal would bring an additional charge. We will never know definitively what he was impaired by at the time of the crash.

Upon questioning, Woods was deemed cooperative but was cautious not to incriminate himself.

Former President Donald Trump commented on the crash, expressing sympathy for Woods and stating his concerns during a public appearance. I feel so badly. There was an accident. That’s all I know. He’s a very close friend of mine, he’s an amazing person, an amazing man, Trump said.

Sheriff Budensiek concluded by indicating Woods would remain in custody for around eight hours and would then be released on bond, with the golfer's representatives contacted for further comments.
