At least 15 civilians have been confirmed dead in Sunday’s shooting attack at Bondi Beach, amidst a gathering to mark the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.
Authorities confirmed that tragic losses include two rabbis, a Holocaust survivor, and a 10-year-old girl named Matilda. Matilda, described by her former teacher as a 'bright, joyful, and spirited child,' was among those who succumbed to injuries after the attack.
The Harmony Russian School of Sydney also expressed their grief, honoring her memory and sending condolences to her family and friends affected by this heartbreaking event.
Another victim identified is Rabbi Eli Schlanger, known as the 'Bondi Rabbi' and head of the local Chabad mission, who was organizing the event. His cousin confirmed his death, emphasizing the tragic loss felt by family and community alike.
French national Dan Elkayam and Holocaust survivor Alexander Kleytman are among the other victims. Elkayam, who had moved to Australia last year, was described as a talented football player deeply integrated into the local community.
Kleytman’s wife recounted the harrowing moment of the attack, stating that he had shielded her from the gunfire. His legacy includes two children and 11 grandchildren, highlighting the profound impact he had on his family and the importance of family bonds strengthened through adversity.
As tributes pour in from various community leaders and organizations, the local Jewish community grapples with the trauma of such violence during a time meant for celebration.
