US President Donald Trump has threatened to slap a 100% tariff on Canadian goods if the country strikes a trade deal with China. If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A., Trump stated on Truth Social.

It is unclear what deal Trump is referring to in his social media post. Last week, Canada's Prime Minister Carney announced a strategic partnership with China, and agreed to reduce tariffs. At the time, Trump called the move a good thing. However, tensions between the US and Canada have grown in recent days, especially after Carney's speech in Davos where he mentioned that the US-led world order had been ruptured.

Carney urged other middle powers to unite against economic coercion from greater powers, though he did not mention Trump by name. Trump responded by asserting that Canada is dependent on the US for its existence.

Trump also withdrew an invitation for Canada to join his new Board of Peace following this exchange. In his social media post, Trump further stated that Carney should not attempt to make Canada a Drop Off Port for Chinese goods into the US.

Canada's US trade minister Dominic LeBlanc rebutted Trump's claims, clarifying that the government is not pursuing a free trade deal with China, but is concentrating on building a stronger Canadian economy and engaging in diversifying trade beyond the US.

Under the recent agreement between Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping, China will lower tariffs on Canadian canola oil significantly while Canada will tax Chinese electric vehicles at a reduced rate. This visit marks a significant moment in their bilateral trade relations, indicating potential economic investments from China into Canada. Carney sees these advancements as positioning Canada well in the changing global landscape.
