The US says its forces have boarded a sanctioned ship carrying Iranian oil in the Indian Ocean in the country's latest naval move against Iran.
The US Department of Defence (DoD) stated it conducted a maritime interdiction of the M/T Majestic X. This follows the US imposing a blockade on maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports on April 13.
President Trump has escalated rhetoric regarding the threat posed by Iranian vessels, ordering the US Navy to shoot and kill any boats laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade has led to US Central Command (Centcom) instructing 33 vessels to return to port and vowing to stop ships suspected of aiding Iran.
Iran, labeling the recent US ship interception as piracy, insists that efforts to obstruct its oil logistics are aimed at straining its economy. Trump has expressed satisfaction in the blockade's effectiveness, claiming it is hindering Iran's commercial activities.
While the Iranian government asserts that revenues from tolls imposed on shipping traffic have been collected, specific details remain unverified. The US continues its blockade, despite a recent ceasefire extension, indicating a sustained focus on asserting pressure on Tehran.
As tensions mount, Iran’s military responses have included the seizure of two cargo ships and calls for retaliation against US navy operations, which further complicates the geopolitical climate in the region.
