Activist Sonam Wangchuk leads the call for more autonomy for Ladakh amidst geopolitical concerns.
Sonam Wangchuk, widely recognized as a prominent engineer and educational reformer, and a recipient of the esteemed Ramon Magsaysay Award, is currently at the forefront of protests seeking greater autonomy for Ladakh. This strategic and ecologically sensitive region in Northern India, bordered by China and Pakistan, has been under direct federal control since 2019—a decision initially welcomed by its residents. They believed it would protect Ladakh's unique cultural identity. However, dissatisfaction has grown as promises remain unfulfilled, prompting Wangchuk and his supporters to embark on a substantial 500-mile journey from Ladakh's largest city, Leh, to the Indian capital, New Delhi. They aim to urge the government to resume discussions on the matter. Though negotiations stalled in March, with India's Ministry of Home Affairs stressing a commitment to Ladakh’s constitutional safeguards, official responses to recent demonstrations are pending.
