Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Friday that he has officially become a citizen of Albania, moving one step closer to his expressed desire of leaving his political career behind to lead a life abroad.

The citizenship was granted upon his request through an official decree issued by President Bajram Begaj of Albania. A spokesperson for Adams confirmed the news, emphasizing the longstanding friendship and alliance he shares with the Albanian-American community.

The decision by the Republic of Albania to grant Mayor Adams citizenship reflects that enduring relationship and mutual respect, stated his spokesperson, Todd Shapiro. He added that this recognition serves to strengthen the bond between New York and Albania.

Adams has previously referred to himself as an 'international mayor' and expressed a fondness for Albania, notably tying his affection to personal connections such as his adult son's participation in Albania's version of 'American Idol.'

In October of last year, during his tenure as mayor, Adams traveled to Albania as part of several international visits, stating his intention was to build friendships and relationships that transcend geographical borders.

While the specific intentions behind Adams’ new citizenship remain uncertain, it has been noted that he has expressed ambitions of relocating from New York City after his tenure. In the past, he showed interest in living in places like Baku and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Following his political career, Adams has been spotted in various global locations including Dubai and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and he has even discussed potential business opportunities in Senegal.

Recently, he launched a cryptocurrency aimed at countering antisemitism, however, it drew negative attention due to significant financial losses.
