India's weather department has announced that parts of northern India, including the capital city, Delhi, are poised to experience heatwaves this weekend. A significant spike in temperatures was recorded, crossing 40°C in various areas, marking one of the hottest days in the region this year.
The forecast indicates that not only Delhi but also several states in central and western India, including Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, will face above-normal temperatures for the next few days.
Summers in India can be perilous, as extreme heat can lead to numerous health issues, sometimes resulting in fatalities. A recent report highlighted the impact of rising temperatures, revealing that nearly one-third of heatwave days in 2024 could be attributed to climate change. This scenario also caused substantial labor productivity losses, particularly in agriculture and construction, amounting to an economic deficit of approximately $194 billion.
On Friday, the weather department warned that temperatures might increase further, prompting the education department in Delhi to issue directives for schools to mitigate risks. These include halting outdoor classes and encouraging hydration among students.
As the region prepares to confront the escalating heat, local residents and students adapt their routines, showcasing the resilience and everyday challenges faced under the blaring sun.
