In a chaotic incident in the Russian‑occupied Crimean peninsula, a soldier reportedly opened fire on his fellow soldiers and later on civilians in the village of Khmelnytske, killing four people and injuring several others.
The Moscow‑appointed governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said the attacker was detained but his identity and branch of service are still unknown. Three people were injured in the attack, and authorities are investigating potential motives.
Officials have urged the public to rely on official statements and refrain from spreading unverified rumors. The event comes amid heightened tensions with Ukraine, where Russia maintains a significant military presence and Ukraine has targeted Russian forces with drone and missile strikes.
Russia had annexed Crimea in 2014, a move rejected by most of the international community, which still regards the territory as occupied Ukrainian land.
