A project to restore tropical forests and a global ocean treaty initiative are among the winners of this year's Earthshot Prize.
The winners, named at an awards ceremony in Brazil, will each receive £1 million to scale up their projects aimed at repairing the climate.
Prince William, who founded the global environmental award in 2020, described the winners as an inspiration and proof that progress is possible.
Among the presenters at the ceremony were Brazilian football legend Cafu, Olympian Rebeca Andrade, and former Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel, with performances by pop stars Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, and London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan also attended the event.
Prince William, the president of the prize, stated that his goal in founding it was to make this the decade we transform our world for the better whilst addressing pressing environmental issues.
The prize, inspired by former US President JFK's Moonshot project, includes five goals: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate.
This year's event marked a halfway point for the 10-year commitment Prince William made to the prize, with nearly 2,500 nominations submitted from 72 countries, leading to 15 finalists and five winners.
The detailed list of winners includes projects focusing on diverse environmental challenges such as the Atlantic Forest's protection and marine life conservation through the High Seas Treaty.
Chief executive of the Protect & Restore Nature winner, Thiago Picolo, expressed how this recognition validates their mission and encourages continued progress.
In supporting initiatives like these, Prince William emphasized the shared optimism necessary to combat climate change, highlighting the urgent call to action represented by the Earthshot Prize.
